    Love thy Neighbour

No matter whether you love or hate your neighbour, most of us value privacy in our own backyards. But the pursuit of privacy can put us at loggerheads with those around us.

Fencing issues, trees and overhanging plants are up there with noisy cars and motorbikes, barking dogs and the unwelcome visits of cats on the long list of issues that can bring neighbours to blows. Water restrictions – or some gardeners’ desire to sneak in an extra illegal watering – are also taking their toll.

It can be difficult to solve existing problems, particularly if goodwill is long gone, but here are ideas on how to keep the peace by taking a sensible approach to your garden. If you can’t solve the problem between you, you can seek mediation through your local Community Justice Centre.

    Fencing with Neighbours

There’s a saying that good fences make good neighbours and it’s not far from the truth.

If you have a well-maintained fence between you and “them next door”, chances are everyone’s happy.

There are strict laws relating to fences that cover acceptable heights, materials and equitable sharing of the cost of new fences or repairs.

Exact requirements vary from council to council but generally fences have to be built on the boundary and in consultation with the neighbour.

They should reflect the standard of fences in the neighbourhood. In most cases, the costs are split equally but where more expensive materials are required, this can affect distribution of costs.

What to do: Before you approach your neighbour about building or replacing a fence, check local regulations with your council.
